About the Workshop
Join us online on Saturday, March 28th from 10am–12:30pm Pacific for Understanding Value: Bring Depth to Your Art with Ohn Mar Win!
In this workshop, learn how Ohn Mar builds her iconic dimensional sketches through an exploration of value, shape, and color. Ohn Mar’s process-based approach emphasizes observation: drawing from life, we’ll use familiar art supplies as sketch subjects, and learn how to simplify complex objects into clear, readable shapes.
Training the eye to identify nuances in light and shadow is a key to strong drawing and painting. We’ll perform quick value studies to explore form and structure, and conclude with an exercise using toned paper to transform monochromatic studies into colorful works of art. Participants are encouraged to work loosely and imperfectly and to see sketchbooks as a space for learning!
We hope to see you there!
Workshop Structure
This workshop has two options available for purchase: Live Access or Recorded Access.

Recommended Supplies
References
In lieu of a reference image, Ohn Mar invites participants to bring favorite art supplies or other supplies as subjects for learning about value. We will be drawing from life, so fill your workspace with a variety of your own art supplies as reference!
Pen & Pencil:
Bring something you can use for highlights, such as a white Posca pen, whiteout, gel pens like Gelly Rolls, or Titanium White gouache. For darks, bring a thick dark brown or black marker, a thin dark brown or black fine liner, and a selection of colored pencils, including dark brown, dark blue, or burgundy. Thin and thick tool recommendations with black ink are below:
Watercolors
Whatever pigments you want to paint with!
Brushes
A size 8 or 10 round or quill brush.
Paper
Watercolor paper that is at least 135lbs (200gsm), four+ sheets of printer paper, three+ sheets of toned paper in gray, tan or kraft, and one sheet of toned watercolor paper. About Ohn Mar Win
Ohn Mar Win is a self-taught watercolor artist, illustrator, and sketchbook enthusiast from the UK who believes in the joy of everyday creativity. She has been painting in sketchbooks for over a decade, filling more than 60 of them with everyday observations, especially food, florals, and travel scenes. Her process is all about staying loose and expressive by capturing the essence of a subject rather than fussing over every detail.
“My motto is, ‘don’t faff’—it’s a UK term for not overworking,” she says. Ohn Mar has shared her passion for art with thousands of students worldwide, and loves helping others build their confidence with loose watercolor and on-location sketching.
In her latest online class, Watercolour Made Simple: A Beginner’s Guide with Fruit & Vegetables, participants have access to over five hours of instruction that covers water control, color mixing, and exercises to build confidence in watercolor painting.
