Recommended Supplies
Pens/Ink
Thainlin’s favorite sketching pens include the Mitsubishi Uni Pin fineliners (Black) with tips ranging from 0.2, 0.3, and 0.5 and a brush tip. The pigment is waterproof and fade-proof; this is ideal for sketching and applying watercolor washes. These pens are inexpensive, and other brands like Sakura perform similarly.
Thainlin also sketches with a fountain pen with a Fude nib (i.e. a bent nib) loaded with De Artramentis Document Ink.
White Gel Pen
Thainlin likes Sakura Gelly Roll Pens for whites and highlights.
Pencils
Thainlin uses a mechanical pencil with a 2B lead for quick outlines.
Watercolors
Thainlin loves the vibrancy of Daniel Smith watercolor pigments, and he uses them in his Folio and Pocket Palettes. Below is a list of the colors in his Folio Palette:
Quinacridone Gold (Holbein)
Permanent Red
Cadmium Orange Hue
Undersea Green
Hooker’s Green
Permanent Green Light
Verditer Blue
Davy’s Gray (Holbein)
Van Dyck Brown
Brushes
Thainlin uses the Pentel Aquash Water Brush for easy carry and small sketches and uses the Escoda Travel Brush Set (Ultimo Series) for larger works, with brushes ranging from sizes 2 to 16.
Paper
Thainlin prefers high-quality 100% cotton watercolor paper from various makers, especially Fabriano, Arches, Canson, and Hahnemühle. We carry the 100% Cotton Hahnemühle Watercolor Book in our shop.
Miscellaneous
A cup for water, and a shop towel or rag.
About Thainlin Tay
Thainlin Tay lives on the tropical island of Singapore. As an avid urban sketcher and artist, he enjoys visiting the city’s older historical areas to sketch buildings and places of worship that harken back to when Singapore was a trading port for the old British Empire. His goal is to capture these architectural gems to represent a part of the new and old city with his artistic input.
