Palette of Place
Live workshop with Maria Coryell-Martin.
Workshops are not eligible for discount.
About the Workshop
Join us online on Thursday, January 22nd from 3pm–5:30pm Pacific for Palette of Place: Discover Colors Around You with Maria Coryell-Martin!
In this workshop, learn to create your own shorthand color notes and discover limited palettes to capture the light, atmosphere, and details of your surroundings. Expeditionary artist and Art Toolkit Founder Maria Coryell-Martin will begin by reviewing the properties of watercolor paints, before exploring a process for experimenting with colors in any environment to support developing a palette of place.
Mix a range of colors from muted, moody tones to vibrant, bright hues, and sketch distinct scenes ranging from the textured rocks of mountain peaks and subtle winter snow to rocky coastlines.
We hope to see you there!

Recommended Supplies
Pen & Pencil
A pencil for sketching and a pen for note-taking, such as the Helvetica Mechanical Pencil or Helvetica Ballpoint Pen.
Watercolors
Please paint with what you have and enjoy! Maria recommends having a split primary palette (a warm and cool of each color) and a neutral such as Burnt Umber.
In this workshop, Maria will use following Daniel Smith paints: Hansa Yellow Medium, Quinacridone Rose, Deep Scarlet, Cerulean Blue Chromium, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Blue (Red Shade), Indanthrone Blue, Yellow Ochre, Quinacridone Gold, Lunar Earth, Burnt Umber, and Primatek Hematite Genuine.
Brushes
A number 8 round brush, such as the Rosemary & Co R10 Golden Synthetic Pointed Size 8 or R13 Sable Blend Size 8 travel brush, will work well for this workshop. Maria’s favorite round is the Rosemary & Co R28 Red Dot Mop. A similar brush is the R19 Red Dot Pointed Round Size 12.
Paper
Sketchbook for notes and cold-press watercolor paper, such as a Hahnemühle 100% Cotton Watercolor Book or the Hahnemühle Watercolor Book will also work well. If you prefer to work loose leaf, Maria likes 140lb Arches cold press watercolor paper.
Other Supplies
A great tool for plotting triads and color exploration.
Paper Towel or Rag
Maria likes the reusable blue shop towels available at most hardware stores.
Water Cup
Maria recommends 2–3 small water containers, one for rinsing and 1–2 for cleaner water.
About Maria Coryell-Martin
Maria Coryell-Martin is an expeditionary artist following the tradition of traveling artists as naturalists and educators. Since 2005, she has focused on painting polar and glaciated regions, working with scientists and on expeditions in the Pacific NW, Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and the Antarctic Peninsula.
In the field, she sketches with ink and watercolor, and collects multimedia recordings to build her palette of place: a record of experience, climate, and color. This work inspires studio paintings for exhibits, as well as multimedia presentations and hands-on workshops to promote observation, scientific inquiry, and environmental awareness.
Maria is the founder of the Art Toolkit, creating expedition-proven tools for sketching and painting, from urban to wilderness adventures.
