Inspired by the movement of light across the Salish Sea, the limited-edition Salish Waves Folio Palette features a teal finish wrapped in bold, flowing white lines. The pattern evokes shifting currents, tide lines, and how sunlight ripples across the water.

By the Salish Sea

Designed in celebration of Art Toolkit Founder and Expeditionary Artist Maria Coryell-Martin’s Salish Explorations exhibit, the limited-edition Salish Waves Folio Palette nods to Maria’s time sketching, painting, swimming, and exploring the shorelines of the Pacific Northwest. When asked once to describe the color of water, Maria responded “water is light,” considering the reflections of the atmosphere, and patterns of sunlight dancing in the shallows. With its teal finish and flowing white wave design, it’s a bold companion for watercolor sketching wherever water inspires you.

an excerpt from Maria

Sketching in the Mist

“While I painted, the rain continued to fall, with occasional drops splattering onto my pages. I like the effect of the random splashes on my page, reminding me of the weather. All around us, the colors from the mist and rain were delightfully saturated. The colors of the grasses and ground cover practically glowed in the soft light. It was so peaceful.”

Painting Direct with Watercolor

The Folio Palette is Maria’s favorite size for direct watercolor sketching, with room for large pans and plenty of mixing space. Pair it with Maria’s go-to brushes, including the Niji Flat Water Brush, Pentel Aquash Water Brush, and Rosemary & Co R28 Red Dot Large Mop, and add extra Mixing Pans to customize your setup.

A teal rectangular box with a clear lid and compartments contains small square containers, arranged neatly on a bed of dry grass. Some containers are scattered around the box.

Build Your Perfect Palette

The Salish Waves Folio Palette does not include paint pans, giving you the opportunity to mix and match pans to customize to your heart’s content.

We’ve mapped out a few simple options to get you started above. Switch in a bigger pan for a color you love to mix with, or swap paint pans for a Mixing Pan, available in three sizes: Small, Large and XL. Scroll down to browse pan options. The combinations are endless!

Suggested Arrangements

To get started, consider three pan configurations. Assemble 15 Double Pans in a Folio Palette for a uniform look and proportionate access to pigments, or combine Standard, Double, and Mixing Pans for convenient direct watercolor painting and space to mix hues. Finally, try an arrangement pictured to the right, of a dozen Mini Pans and Standard Pans to maximize colors in your palette, and line them with Small and Large Mixing Pans to keep your mixes from running together.
