The Story Behind This Collaboration

In 2022, Case For Making co-founder and owner Alexis Joseph reached out to us about purchasing our pans wholesale. As we got to know each other in a follow-up conversation, the idea for this collaboration was sparked! From the beginning, we envisioned a palette of brilliant, sparkly colors that celebrated and emphasized joy and play.

After a little back and forth about style and colors, we landed on the rainbow theme, and the cuteness of the Demi Palette was too tempting to ignore. What resulted was our first ever custom color and engraved Demi Palette, and we couldn't be happier with how it turned out. The dark blue palette case has a matte finish featuring a mini rainbow graphic on the lid, hinting at the spectrum of luminescent pigments within. With ten handmade fluorescent and metallic paints inside, the Rainglow Palette invites play and silliness!

All About Play

The creation of the Rainglow Palette came from a place of play. For all of you who lean towards precision and reproduction, making art with this palette is an opportunity to feel lighthearted and free!

In the words of Case for Making co-founder and owner Alexis Joseph: “We want to give everybody permission to play, experiment, and have fun and try to let go of any negative internal dialogue. So many people can be hard on themselves about trying to make something good, and we’re trying to remind everybody that art is about a creative process, practice, and engaging with your own curiosity.”

When I use watercolor, I want it to feel light, free, fun, and kind of silly. Typically with art, I’m someone who wants to be precise and to erase, so watercolor time has to be play time!

A Custom Engraving for the Rainglow Palette Lid

For this project, we designed a special Demi Palette in a beautiful dark blue with a custom pan arrangement of 8 Mini Pans in the shape of a rainbow with 2 Standard Pans in the center. The custom lid design features a cute rainbow graphic. Open the dark blue case to reveal a vibrant spectrum of fluorescent colors and shimmery sparkles!

Rainglow Paints

Each limited-edition Rainglow Palette includes ten watercolor paints by Case for Making: eight fluorescent* and two metallic pigments. These paints are highly pigmented, vibrant, and handmade in San Francisco, California. Paintmaker Rachel spearheaded the paint production for the Rainglow Palette.

Bright, fun colors are a great way to explore and play. They’re just so in your face, it almost forces you to be present and be wowed by them!

Fluorescents

These eight Mini Pans of fluorescent colors have a luminescent neon hue in daylight and glow under UV light! Fluorescent pigments are inherently not lightfast, but what they lack in longevity, they make up for in magnificence. Simply put, they’re a lot of fun! Fading can be reduced by coating finished pieces with UV protective varnish and/or keeping them out of direct sunlight.

About Metallic Paints and Mixing Colors

This unique palette includes two Standard Pans filled to the brim with metallic paints, Comet Gold and Metallic Onyx Black. These impressively pigmented, lightfast metallic paints can be used on their own or layered over other paints to add sparkle and pizzazz to your sketchbook pages.

The Case for Making team loves mixing metallics and fluorescent paints with earth pigments to create something unexpected! They highly encourage you to play with your favorite palettes side-by-side and see what you discover.

Fun Prompts to Try!

1. Create a painting of a scene using all the "wrong" colors. Try picking the complementary colors (opposite from each other on the color wheel), and then have fun with it!

2. Turn on your favorite music and use fluorescent, vibrant paints to create squiggles and patterns across a page as you feel inspired by the music. Switch genres and explore how different music impacts (or doesn't) how you let loose with color!

3. Doodle elements of your day with super bright colors! Try filling a page with joyful sketches, from flowers to food to cute animals.

This project has been many years in the making, and we are so grateful to work with other awesome small businesses and paintmakers like Case for Making. On behalf of everyone who contributed to making the Rainglow Palette come together, thank you so much for sharing in the joy of its launch!
