Various shades of green watercolor swatches arranged horizontally and vertically. The swatches include solid stripes, semi-transparent blocks, wavy lines, and shaped brush strokes.

Introducing the R20 Short Flat

As with the R4 One Stroke, the R20 Short Flat is a classic brush shape that can be used on its side for thick lines or edge for narrow ones. This brush features shorter bristles which allows for more brush control.

Use flat brushes for broad, confident strokes, embracing the big picture of a composition instead of getting into every detail. A flat can be laid on the broad side to paint blocky shapes of architecture or abstract compositions, or used on the narrow edge to create everything from the calligraphic shapes of pine trees to distant horizon lines.

Explore blocking in shapes with watercolor and gouache (these brushes also handle oil and acrylic paints!) from broad strokes, and clean, sharp lines.

Sketching Inspiration

Pine Trees

Using the R20 Short Flat, Maria mixed Quinacridone Gold and Indanthrone Blue in her palette lid to sketch pine trees in her sketchbook. She started with quick, vertical strokes with the narrow edge of the brush, then used the flat side and corners to dance down either side of the trunk to create branches.

A colorful abstract landscape featuring wavy blue and white snow-like patterns with patches of orange and green elements. The background features dark trees against a bright blue sky.

I loved using this flat brush to lay down gouache. The shorter bristles hold paint well and have excellent spring for broad strokes and patterns.
