Watercolor Essentials

Join me for an hour and a half of watercolor exploration, with a focus on foundation techniques.

Online Workshop

With a focus on foundation watercolor techniques, we’ll cover three approaches to add depth to your paintings:

  • Mixing colors: explore how mixing warm and cool colors around the color wheel can create mood and atmosphere.
  • Making marks: practice how a range of mark-making can enliven your paintings.
  • Seeing shapes: understand how positive and negative shapes are the foundation of composition.

Above all, we’ll play and have fun!

This workshop will take place via Zoom. I will send out the link to join the Zoom session a few days before the workshop, along with some images and notes for preparation. After our workshop, you will receive access to a recording for review, as well as an invitation to the Art Toolkit Workshops Facebook group for additional opportunities to connect.

Supplies

I recommend having the following supplies:

  • Paper: I recommend a minimum of 90lb paper for light watercolor/mixed-media use. I like Moleskine watercolor journals and Stillman and Birn Alpha and Beta softcover sketchbooks.
  • Watercolors: please feel free to paint with what you have! I'll be demonstrating with the Essential Colors, which include a warm and cool of each primary color. It's a great place to start if you are beginning.
  • Brushes: use what you have! I'll demonstrate with travel and water brushes which I like for their portability and convenience.
  • Extras: clean paper towel (blue shop towels are my favorite). Optional: old toothbrush, small sponge scraps, spray bottle.

What to expect

Art Toolkit workshops are live events that take place on Zoom. During the workshop, you will have a chance to ask the instructor questions. After the workshop, we’ll provide you with a link to a recording to review on your own time (viewable for at least six months).

We’ll be in touch a week before the workshop with instructions for connecting and additional information. Please remember to adjust for your time zone. Tickets are non-refundable, but we may be able to transfer your ticket to another student if there is a waitlist.

We present our workshops with automated captions. If you wish to request additional accommodations, please let us know in advance.
